Panic Disorder
What is Panic Disorder?
Panic disorder is an anxiety condition marked by sudden, unexpected surges of intense fear or discomfort, known as panic attacks. It often develops after experiencing repeated panic attacks and can lead to persistent fear of future episodes and the possible consequences. This persistent fear can affect confidence, wellbeing and quality of life.
To manage this fear, individuals may adopt “safety behaviours” such as constantly monitoring bodily sensations, avoiding certain places, or seeking reassurance. Over time, these behaviours can unintentionally maintain anxiety and keep the panic cycle going.
Common Symptoms
Panic attacks are sudden episodes of mental and physical distress that typically peak within minutes. While panic attacks are distressing, they are not dangerous and do not cause physical harm.
You may experience at least four of the following symptoms:
- Pounding heart, palpitations, or accelerated heart rate
- Sweating
- Trembling or shaking
- Sensations of shortness of breath or feeling unable to breathe
- Feeling of choking
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Nausea or abdominal distress
- Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or faint
- Derealisation (feeling of unreality)
- Depersonalisation (feeling detached from oneself)
- Fear of losing control or “going crazy”
- Fear of dying or a sense of dread
- Paraesthesia (numbness or tingling sensations)
- Chills or hot flushes
Most panic attacks last between 5 and 20 minutes, though some may persist longer.
How We Can Help
We offer evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to support individuals experiencing panic disorder. CBT provides a structured, supportive space to explore the connection between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and equips you with practical strategies to manage anxiety with greater confidence and clarity.
Through CBT, you’ll learn about the panic cycle and why symptoms feel so intense, gain tools to challenge frightening thoughts, and gradually face feared sensations and situations in a safe, supported way. Therapy also helps reduce habits like avoidance or repetitive checking that keep panic going, while building confidence in your ability to cope and feel more in control.
CBT is the recommended first-line treatment for panic disorder and is tailored to your unique needs. Sessions are available in person or remotely via phone or online, offering flexibility to suit your preferences and schedule.
Panic disorder is common and treatable. With the right support, you can reduce the fear of panic, regain a sense of control, and build lasting confidence in managing anxiety.
